My question is whether the use of technology affects motivation? I found an article by Debra Filer called, “Using Technology to Increase Classroom Participation.” The article searched for the answer to four questions: Does the use of clickers in the classroom 1) increase student knowledge scores; 2) enhance student motivation and comfort in the classroom; 3) increase the quality of a lecture as perceived by the student; and 4) increase student participation? These clickers are a form of technology, ARS device, that allows students to answer questions by entering a response on a keypad. The use of these clickers allows students to actively participate in the classroom. Allowing the students to respond during a lecture can help reinforce learning if the answer is correct or if the answer is incorrect, it can help the student clarify his or her questions. With the interactive use of learning through the clickers, it helps keep students more involved in the lectures due the interactive nature.
For the study, 90 students enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program participated. The study was designed to assess the impact of wireless technology known as an audience response system (ARS), aka clickers. The control group consisted of students responding verbally to questions posed during lectures, and students in the intervention groups response anonymously using ARS. The results from the study are that the use of clickers enhanced students’ emotional experiences in the classroom by promoting a sense of comfort, encouraging participation, and motivating students to answer questions correctly. The anonymity of the clicker responses diminishes fear of giving wrong answers in class. With the use of clickers, students are more willing to participate in classroom discussions and lectures. The ARS allows the lectures to be more effective and turn the classroom into interactive. One thing to keep in mind when using clickers, the author mentioned that when the intervention group kept getting answers wrong, the lost interest. In order to maintain enthusiasm and interest in the classroom, the levels of difficulty for each question should vary.
This article related to my 20% projects because it gives an example of a technological device that helps increase motivation in the classroom. The use of the clickers during lectures helps students to have comfort in answering the teachers questions. I will use this article for my research study to help prove that technology does affect motivation.
I found this article very interesting. Personally for me, I completely agree that clickers help increase motivation because I am a student that doesn’t like to answer much during class even if I know the answer because I am too shy. The clicker allows me to answer questions, reinforce my learning and get credit by not having to speak up in class. I know its a good skill to have to be able to answer in class but I like the anonymity of answering through the clickers. Overall, this was a helpful source in my quest to find research about technology helping increase motivation. Even the simplest form of technology, like the clicker can help increase motivation.
